Lineker risks Alan Shearer’s wrath with Liverpool and Newcastle news he’s heard

Gary Lineker riled up Alan Shearer after sharing what he had heard Liverpool are planning to do to Newcastle United in the summer.

The Reds are in terrific form under Arne Slot this season and prepare to face the Magpies in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday (16 March), as well as looking almost certain to win the Premier League title.

However, if success is delivered at Anfield, the boss will only be thinking about next season and how he can replicate similar outcomes.

Gary Lineker pokes Shearer with Liverpool jibe

The summer transfer window could be a transformative period for Liverpool with Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah all out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

What the future holds is yet to be seen but Slot could have a serious rebuild on his hands if there are high-profile exits.

Even without potential departures, the Reds would be eager to strengthen their side in the hope of building on what they have already done and beating their own standards.

One man that has been linked with a move to Merseyside of late is Alexander Isak, who has been in red hot form for Newcastle this season.

The striker is under contract at Newcastle and it will no doubt take a high bid to see them part ways with their star man in the summer window.

Nevertheless, Lineker was keen to poke the bear that is Shearer on the Rest is Football podcast (10 March) as he said: “Do you know who I heard was linked with Liverpool? You’re not going to like it Al. Your mate Isak.”

Shearer simply replied: “He can be linked all they want.”

Co-host Micah Richards probed Shearer asking how much it would take him to sell before the former striker ranted: “I wouldn’t. What’s the point? Why would you sell him?

“Why would Newcastle even contemplate selling him? You might just get his left foot for £150million. Don’t get me started lads.”

Liverpool would be lucky to secure Isak in summer

Given how well Isak has done for Newcastle this season, it’s no surprise that he is a man in high demand ahead of the summer transfer window.

Liverpool’s desire to gain his services could well depend on where they find themselves with regards to out-of-contract Salah, as losing him would suddenly leave a big gap to be filled with goals.

However, you have to agree with Shearer on this one, even if he is influenced by his own desires as a Newcastle great.

The Magpies simply have no reason to sell because regardless of how much money they make in letting go of him, they will not be able to replace him with someone near that level who could elevate them forward.

It would certainly take a massive fee for Newcastle to be tempted to make a move, but it would not be surprising to see the Swedish start start in black and white against next season.

In the meantime, the Reds need to focus on how they can keep him quiet at Wembley Stadium.
