Liverpool ‘always unlikely’ to spend in winter window after Arne Slot admission

Liverpool were “always likely” to not spend in the winter transfer window, says Dan Plumley.

The Reds sit top of the Premier League with a six-point margin and have secured a place in the Champions League round of 16 after topping the new league phase.

However, supporters and pundits such as Jamie Carragher had called on the Anfield outfit to make signings to consolidate their position, which they didn’t.

Speaking exclusively to Liverpool News, Plumley, a football finance expert admitted that plans are more likely to be in place for the summer than take any risks now.

“It was always likely you would see them do exactly what they have done,” he said.

“That is not always a bad thing, they are well set, the manager has come out and said he is happy with the squad and doesn’t feel like he needs to shake things up now.

They are top of the Premier League, they’ve got a bit of a cushion, they have had a really good Champions League campaign so far.

“You would expect them to be putting plans in place for the summer for sure, but I think it was likely the way the table had worked out, you know, ‘why change things at the moment when things are going so well’ and that has been a factor in their decision not to spend in January.”

Liverpool did not need to spend

The Reds hierarchy were justified in their approach to the transfer market given the chaotic nature of the winter window.

Their position at the top of the league and their progress so far in Europe means that Arne Slot is satisfied with the options at his disposal.

The situation is likely to change at the end of the season as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk decide whether to renew their contracts or not.

The Merseysiders are expected to reinforce their squad in the summer as Slot attempts to continue the momentum from his maiden season in English football.
