Liverpool will invest in the summer but their transfer plans will be decided by the ongoing contract saga at Anfield, according to James Pearce.

The Athletic reporter claimed (4 February) that the Reds' priorities will be "heavily influenced" by the outcome of discussions with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

The Anfield outfit is still in negotiations to extend the stay of all three stars but as it stands they are free to agree on pre-contract deals with foreign clubs and "contingency plans have been drawn up".

It is said that the Merseysiders did not bolster their squad in the winter window as Arne Slot is satisfied with the options at his disposal.

Will Liverpool regret not strengthening in winter window?

The Reds are currently top of the Premier League with a six-point margin and are through to the round of 16 of the Champions League after finishing first in the league phase.

However, there is concern amongst the fanbase considering the way the Merseysiders fell away from the title race last season after leading the league in April.

This campaign is not hindered by the emotion of Jurgen Klopp's departure or his heavy metal style of football, Slot's less intense training sessions and injury management should allow them to go the distance.

The only distraction will be the contract saga, with none of the three stars committing their future to the club yet although Salah and Van Dijk have hinted in the media that they want to stay.

Alexander-Arnold could be swayed by interest from Real Madrid and is the only one not to reveal his stance publicly.

Sporting director Richard Hughes has a lot of work to do between now and the end of the season but Slot will be keen to ensure contract drama does not spill onto the pitch.
