Liverpool are poised for a mouthwatering encounter with Newcastle United in their second match of the Premier League.

As for Newcastle, they were held to a goalless draw by Aston Villa, demonstrating how big a miss Alexander Isak is.

While he will not feature, much of the talk will be about the Swede as the pair meet at St James' Park on Monday night.

Team news

Howe confirmed that Isak will not play against Liverpool as the saga of the summer rolls on in the North East.

As for Slot, he confirmed that Ryan Gravenberch is back in the squad after missing the first game through suspension and paternity leave.

However, Liverpool will be without Jeremie Frimpong with a hamstring injury, and he is not expected to return until after the international break.

His natural replacement, Conor Bradley, has resumed training, but his fitness for Monday remains uncertain.

  • Newcastle will be without their star striker
  • Slot must decide who fills in at right-back
  • The Reds will be buoyed by Gravenberch's return

Slot did reference alternatives who could fill the void during his press conference, with Joe Gomez a possible option.

Jacob Ramsey could make his Newcastle debut against the Merseyside club and is available after completing his £43million move from Villa.

Furthermore, Joe Willock has made a full recovery from his injury and is fit to play at St James' Park.

Predicted lineups

Newcastle: Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton, Elanga, Barnes, Gordon

Liverpool: Alisson, Jones, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Salah, Gakpo, Ekitike

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Liverpool

Liverpool may have secured all three points against Bournemouth on home soil, but Newcastle away are a different beast.

St James' Park will be rocking for their first home match on home soil, and the supporters will want to cheer on their side without Isak.

Last season, the contest between the two sides ended in a 3-3 draw in the North East, while Newcastle triumphed in the Carabao Cup final.

  • Liverpool's loss to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final was their first against them since 2015
  • The Reds have one win in their last three against the Magpies
  • Liverpool have won 12 of their last 18 against Newcastle

Given the recent head-to-head between the two teams, a 1-1 draw seems like a plausible result.
