Liverpool travel to Galatasaray after suffering their first defeat of the campaign against Crystal Palace.

Liverpool do not have a great record against Turkish sides, and will look to correct that in their latest Champions League clash.

Virgil van Dijk's late header saw Liverpool narrowly beat Atletico Madrid in their opening European match of the season, and they need to better in Istanbul on 30 September.

Arne Slot has angered Liverpool supporters with the decision to leave Federico Chiesa out of the squad for the contest, and a new announcement may increase that fury.

Clement Turpin will officiate Galatasaray vs Liverpool

Liverpool are hoping to win the Champions League, and they will expect to get past the Turkish outfit quite easily.

However, their chances may have decreased after Clement Turpin was announced as referee, as he has a controversial past with the Reds.

The Frenchman refereed the 1-0 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid in 2022, and did not award a penalty to Mohamed Salah for an alleged handball by David Alaba.

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett agreed with the decision, but some involved with the Anfield outfit may still hold a grudge.

Liverpool fans will not have forgotten Clement Turpin's past

That final still stings for Reds supporters, for both the result and the scenes beforehand, in which UEFA's dismal organisation led to dangerous conditions, and ultimately, an apology.

Turpin has actually refereed the Reds on five occasions, with the Madrid loss in Paris being the only defeat for the Redmen in those matches.

  • Liverpool have beaten Augsburg, RB Leipzig and Rangers with Turpin in charge
  • They drew with Spartak Moscow in 2017 with him in the middle
  • The loss to Madrid is the most memorable clash that Turpin has taken with the Reds involved

However, many will still hold Turpin's decision against him, and be wary of his influence in the clash in Istanbul, after he did not give the penalty and Los Blancos went on to win.

Hopefully, he does not have that much of an impact on proceedings this time around, and Slot's side can get back to winning ways.
