Liverpool took another step towards securing the Premier League title with a 1-0 win over city-rivals Everton on Wednesday.

Diogo Jota scored the only goal of the game to take the Reds to 73 points in the table, with just 13 points more required from eight games to seal the Premier League title.

This was Arne Slot's first Merseyside derby at Anfield and he guided the Reds to a narrow victory. The game was tainted by a controversial decision of not sending off James Tarkowski for a horrific challenge on Alexis Mac Allister.

Pundit Gary Neville has been mightily amazed by Liverpool as they march towards their first trophy since Jurgen Klopp's departure.

Liverpool's impressive season

Until the last couple of weeks, Liverpool were active in three competitions - Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup.

However, within a span of five days, the Reds lost the chance to win the Carabao Cup and crashed out of the Champions League.

Despite the recent hiccups in other competitions, the Merseysiders have showcased their domestic dominance in the league, winning 22 games and leading the Premier League table since matchweek 10.

United legend Neville felt that Liverpool would have a 'drop-off' after Klopp left the Reds last year and was regarded as one of the best managers in the club's history.

Neville has subsequently been left impressed with what Slot has managed to do at Anfield in his debut season.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "I'm stunned at where Liverpool are. I don't think we can rewrite history now and say because they lost the Carabao Cup final, because they've gone out of Europe, this is a half-disappointing season. This is an unbelievable season."

Liverpool's season a huge success

Despite not advancing in the Champions League and losing the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle United, this has been one of the most impressive campaigns by Liverpool.

With Slot on the verge of guiding the Reds to their second Premier League title, the Dutchman is about to join an elite list of managers who guided their teams to a Premier League title in their first season in England.

While the likes of Pep Guardiola and Klopp miss out, the exclusive list comprises three managers - Jose Mourinho (Chelsea - 2004), Manuel Pellegrini (Manchester City - 2014) and Antonio Conte (Chelsea - 2017).

Slot deserves all the applause for his exceptional tutelage at Anfield and making the Reds a formidable side in the league and ending Manchester City's dominance.
