Liverpool confirm new backroom appointment for Arne Slot

Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of John Heitinga to Arne Slot’s backroom staff as assistant coach.

The club confirmed the news on their official website (17 July), as the former Everton player becomes the latest addition to the coaching staff.

Heitinga joins a new-look backroom at Anfield, following Sipke Hulshoff, Ruben Peeters, Fabian Otte, and Aaron Briggs through the door.

Liverpool add Heitinga to coaching staff

Heitinga will join Slot after leaving his role as first-team assistant coach at West Ham United.

He started his career as a coach in the Ajax youth setup and had a spell as interim manager of the first-team, taking charge of 22 matches between January and June 2023.

His Ajax side faced Slot and Feyenoord during that time and lost 3-2 in the Eredivisie to his new manager but recorded a 2-1 win against him in the KNVB Cup semi-final (This is Anfield, 17 July).

The 40-year-old has accumulated seven years of coaching experience during his stints at Ajax and West Ham.

Liverpool Anfield

Slot has built a new-look team around him at Anfield this summer and Heitinga’s arrival could mark the end of the incoming.

He revealed in his first Liverpool press conference (5 July), that he was looking to appoint two more coaches to his staff.

Since then, Briggs has joined as first-team individual development coach and now Heitinga has arrived at the club.

Both will bring a wealth of Premier League experience to the team, as the rest of the staff, including Slot have no previous experience in England.

Heitinga already knows the city well from his time at Everton across Stanley Park, but he will return in Liverpool red in the Anfield dugout next season.
