Liverpool’s best ever third kits as 25/26 design set to be released

Liverpool’s new third shirt is set to be released on 9 September.

Liverpool signed a bumper new kit deal with Adidas, and the home and away shirts have already been released, with a generally positive reaction.

The green design is a hark back to the 1990s, and is expected to be a hit amongst Liverpool supporters.

Here, Liverpool News looks at some of the best third shirts that have graced Anfield over the years.

2006/07

Liverpool were European heavyweights in the mid-2000s, and they reached another Champions League final in this campaign.

The third shirt was worn in an iconic match against Barcelona at Camp Nou, in which Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise scored to give the Reds a 2-1 win.

The L4 outfit would ultimately lose to AC Milan as the Italian club got revenge for Istanbul, but the white and green kit is still iconic among collectors.

2009/10

The Reds had a dismal campaign in the 2009-10 season, as the Anfield club crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage.

Rafael Benitez’s side finished seventh in the Premier League, and the Spaniard departed at the end of the season.

The white kit with red details, which was worn by the likes of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard is iconic, even if the campaign itself was forgettable.

2016/17

New Balance had some hits, but a lot of misses in their time manufacturing the Reds’ kits, but the 2016/17 third is a classic.

The ‘toxic thunder’ strip, as it was known, had a mixed reaction from supporters, but its reputation has increased in recent years.

The likes of Roberto Firmino and Emre Can wore this shirt as the Reds qualified for the Champions League for the first time since the 2009/10 campaign.

2018/19

The 2018/19 campaign is one of the best ever in Liverpool’s illustrious history.

Klopp’s side notched 99 points in the Premier League but missed out on the title to Manchester City and won their sixth Champions League title.

The third shirt, which was a throwback to the iconic ‘Candy’ sponsored effort from 1989, was worn in the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, in which Virgil van Dijk scored a thunder header, and Sadio Mane grabbed two goals.

2019/20

New Balance’s effort in 2019/20 was iconic as Klopp’s Liverpool side won the Premier League for the first time in over 30 years.

The Reds wore the black and teal third strip on several occasions, including away wins over Sheffield United and Burnley, as they romped to the championship.

The L4 outfit won the league by a margin of 18 points, a truly dominant campaign, and the kits from that season are revered as a result.
