Liverpool’s best-ever deadline day signings: Luis Suarez and Premier League title winners
Liverpool have struck some brilliant deals on transfer deadline day over the years.
Liverpool have already added the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike to their squad.
Deadline day is typically reserved for clubs to strike desperate deals that they should have completed weeks in advance, and the Anfield outfit tends not to be active.
However, the Reds have sometimes made exceptions, even under the savvy operators that are Fenway Sports Group.
Liverpool News looks at the Reds’ best deals completed on deadline day in the past.

Luis Suarez
Liverpool supporters were heartbroken after Fernando Torres’ controversial move to Chelsea in a £50million deal.
However, the arrival of Luis Suarez on deadline day quickly made up for that, as the Uruguayan hitman was a menace for Premier League defences.
- Suarez made his debut in a 2-0 win over Stoke City, and scored the second goal at Anfield on 2 February 2011
- Suarez scored 82 goals and notched 32 assists in 122 appearances for the Merseysiders and won the PFA and Premier League Player of the Season award in the 2013/14 season.
- He was banned for 10 matches in April 2014 after biting Chelsea star Branislav Ivanovic
Suarez formed a deadly duo with Daniel Sturridge, and they almost fired Brendan Rodgers’ side to the league title in the 2013/14 campaign.
His time at Anfield was heavily marred by a racist incident with Patrice Evra and the biting saga, and he eventually left for Barcelona in a £65m deal in July 2014.
Despite the chaos, he was worth every penny of the £22.8million that the Reds forked out for his signature.
Ryan Gravenberch
Ryan Gravenberch was a surprise addition to Liverpool’s midfield from Bayern Munich on deadline day in the summer of 2023.
He struggled to forge a regular role under Jurgen Klopp in his debut campaign in English football, but has since turned his Anfield career around.
- Gravenberch featured 39 times in his first season with the Reds for a total of 1,848 minutes
- He made 49 appearances in all competitions in Arne Slot’s maiden campaign for a total of 4,207 minutes
Arne Slot turned the former Ajax man into a holding midfielder, and the rest is history, as he was a key part in the Premier League title win and has fully justified the £34m spent on him.
The Dutchman won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award after his remarkable campaign last time out, and will be key to the Reds’ attempts to retain their crown this season.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain completed a £35million move to Liverpool from Arsenal in the summer of 2017.
He quickly became a fan favourite on Merseyside and was part of Jurgen Klopp’s side that won the Premier League and Champions League.
- Made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in a 5-0 loss to Manchester City on 9 September 2017
- Scored 18 goals and notched 14 assists in 146 games for the Reds
- Missed a total of 105 games for club and country while at Anfield
Injuries robbed ‘the Ox’, as he is affectionately known on Merseyside, of fulfilling his true potential, but he still played a part in one of their most successful eras.
He clearly made an impact on supporters as they made a chant about him, which references the Champions League win in Madrid and his relationship with Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards.
He left to join Besiktas in 2023, winning the Turkish cup with the Istanbul side before recently having his contract terminated.
Mamadou Sakho
Mamadou Sakho joined Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain on 2 September 2013 in an £18m deal.
The Frenchman was a cult figure at Anfield, playing a role in their unlikely title challenge under Rodgers in 2013/14.
- Made his debut on 16 September 2013 in a 2–2 away draw with Swansea City
- Made a total of 80 appearances for the Reds in all competitions
He would later help Klopp’s side reach the Europa League final in the 2015/16 campaign, but he was banned for the 3-1 loss to Sevilla in the final for a doping issue which he was ultimately exonerated.
He fell out with Klopp on the pre-season tour ahead of the 2016/17 season and was loaned to Crystal Palace before completing a permanent move to the Londoners.
Albert Riera
Albert Riera signed for Liverpool on summer deadline day in 2008 from Espanyol for a fee of £8m.
He helped the Reds to finish second in the league under Rafa Benitez in the 2008/09 campaign, just being pipped to the title by Manchester United.
- Made his top-flight debut on the 13th September in a 2-1 win against Manchester United at Anfield
- Totalled 56 appearances for the Reds, scoring five goals and notching nine assists
His relationship with Benitez crumbled in the 2009/10 campaign, and he was suspended for criticising his fellow Spaniard in the media.
Although Riera later insisted there had been a misunderstanding, he could not salvage his Reds career and left in a £3.3m deal to Olympiakos in July 2010.
