Harvey Elliott advised by his former boss to demand Liverpool answers after events at St James’ Park
Liverpool have started their defence of the Premier League title in rather dramatic fashion.
After getting over the line in a six-goal thriller against Bournemouth at Anfield, Liverpool secured a dramatic 3-2 win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Rio Ngumoha was the hero in stoppage time at St James’ Park, as the 16-year-old winger netted the late winner.
Another former young prodigy who seems to be the forgotten man at Liverpool is Harvey Elliott, with one of his former managers claiming that the midfielder must demand answers from Arne Slot regarding his lack of game time.

Tony Mowbray feels Harvey Elliott is wasted on the bench at Liverpool
Mowbray was Elliott’s manager whilst he was on loan at Blackburn Rovers during the 2020/21 campaign.
- Despite being a teenager at the time, Elliott tore up the Championship during his loan spell at Blackburn
- The midfielder scored seven goals and provided 11 assists during his 41 appearances in the second-tier
- Elliott’s creative numbers were outstanding as he averaged 1.7 key passes per game
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football YouTube channel (27 August), Mowbray was asked whether he felt Elliott should leave the Reds.
This comes after Elliott was only used as a late substitute at St James’ Park on Monday.
“If I was going to advise Harvey, he needs to talk to his manager really, I think it’s a waste of talent,” he said.
“I watched the game against Newcastle, and he came on right at the death there and played a pass before the pass that they scored the winner from in the last minute, he’s an amazing talent, he’s got unbelievable quality.”
Elliott, for one reason or another, has not been favoured by Slot since the Dutch manager took over at Liverpool last season.
The 22-year-old started just two games last season and was limited to a total of 399 minutes in the Premier League.
Sam Allardyce also shared his thoughts on the situation, saying: “He should know whether the manager fancies him or not; it’s not difficult…
“He has to balance out how much he played with Jurgen Klopp and how much he’s going to play [under Slot].
“That’s a tale in itself where you knock on the door and don’t leave it to your agent.”
How many games has Harvey Elliott played for Liverpool?
As previously mentioned, Elliott has found gametime hard to come by under Slot.
Elliott has made 139 total appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, but that is since arriving at the Reds in 2019.
Appearences under Klopp | Appearances under Slot |
119 | 30 |
Whilst Klopp evidently rated Elliott higher than Slot, with the midfielder making 34 total Premier League appearances in Klopp’s final season in charge, the midfielder has always struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
Of Elliott’s 139 appearances, 78 have come as a substitute, suggesting he should seek a move away if he wants to play more often.
Elliott has been frequently linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, so do not be surprised if he is wearing another club’s shirt by the time the transfer window closes.
