The defending Premier League champions’ next signing is likely to be a striker, sources have told Liverpool News.

Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have already joined, but a forward is now the priority for them.

Slot needs a number nine who perfectly fits into his system

Slot’s Liverpool require a number nine who seamlessly integrates into his possession-based, high-pressing system, emphasising precise link-up play, intelligent movement and clinical finishing.

His 4-2-3-1 demands a striker who can hold up the ball, facilitate quick transitions and exploit spaces created by wingers and the attacking midfielder, while also contributing defensively.

Nunez, despite his raw pace and work rate, has been inconsistent and has a tendency to miss big chances, which clashes with Slot’s need for efficiency.

His erratic finishing and occasional poor decision-making in tight spaces don’t fully align with the tactical discipline the Reds boss demands.

With the Anfield outfit aiming to compete for the Premier League and Champions League, a new number nine who’s a technically adept forward akin to Roberto Firmino would better suit Slot’s vision.

Another Nunez-esque signing, prioritising athleticism over precision, risks disrupting the system’s fluidity and undermining Liverpool’s title ambitions, especially with an ageing squad needing reliable goal-scoring output.
