Liverpool should profit from Diaz sale after ‘ridiculous’ Madueke news

Liverpool could be set to sanction the sale of Luis Diaz this summer with several clubs interested.

The Reds would prefer to keep the Colombian, who scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League last season, as Liverpool stormed to the title in Arne Slot’s first season.

But tensions have risen following the end of the season, with disagreements between the camps reportedly rife in discussions over a potential new contract for the winger.

In the weeks following, Diaz’s exit has looked more and more likely, with the 28-year-old now reportedly making his intention to leave clear.

Liverpool should hold out for value

With two years remaining on Diaz’s contract, Liverpool have been forced into an uncomfortable situation.

Retaining an unhappy player could see a significant reduction in his value next summer, and then, with just one year remaining on his contract, Diaz could choose to leave on a free transfer in 2027.

But selling the winger this summer would force Liverpool into signing a replacement, with the market for wingers looking increasingly scarce.

That scarcity has been made all the more clear by two ongoing transfer developments elsewhere in the Premier League.

Newcastle United have reportedly completed the signing of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, in a deal worth around £55million.

And in London, Arsenal are reportedly in discussions to sign Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, who could leave for a deal worth in excess of £50m.

Both situations should make one thing clear for Liverpool – Diaz cannot be allowed to leave in a cut-price deal.

Especially in the case of Madueke, who managed just seven goals and four assists in the Premier League last season, Liverpool should view his price point as an encouragement to ask for more for Diaz.

Whilst the 28-year-old is in his prime years, compared to both Madueke and Elanga – who are 23, the former Porto man is established in the Champions League, and now, has a Premier League winners medal to his name.

Liverpool should treat Diaz situation with care

Liverpool’s view of the market’s movements should encourage them to put the Diaz price up, but it will also make them wary of the funds needed to find a replacement.

If the Diaz situation is resolvable, the Reds may be minded to re-renter discussions over fresh terms.
