‘Liverpool to hold squad talks over Preston cancellation’ – Exclusive

Liverpool are due to play Preston in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.

Last Saturday, the entire world came to a standstill when the shocking news emerged that Digo Jota and his brother Andre Silva tragically passed away in a car accident abroad.

Since there has been a remarkable outpouring of love and emotion for everyone involved, with several tributes aired around the country.

Understandably so, Liverpool players have found it tough to come to terms with the loss of a teammate, leaving doubt over whether Sunday’s (13 July) game with Preston will go ahead.

ITV awaiting Liverpool decision ahead of Sunday’s clash

In times like these, football becomes irrelevant, and the welfare of those affected by the situation will always come first.

ITV are said to be awaiting Liverpool’s decision, alongside Preston, as to whether they want to go ahead with Sunday’s game, though Keith Hackett thinks that the game could still go ahead.

Speaking to Liverpool News, he said: “Liverpool have a large squad and despite the shock of losing a star player, respected by everyone connected with the club and beyond. I do hope that they can put together a credible team to fulfil the fixture.

Liverpool should ask the players and seek volunteers to take part. I am sure that they and Preston fans can demonstrate their thoughts on the tragedy on the day.

Liverpool must make the right call

To reiterate, football becomes a distant thought in the back of your mind when a tragedy like this occurs.

After such a heartbreaking loss, players will need time to come to terms with it, and if that means cancelling a game, there should be no issue with doing that.

Jota’s influence at Anfield and personality around Merseyside will never be forgotten, and when the time comes to return to football, it needs to be on the right terms.
