Liverpool ’cause palpitations at Newcastle’ as Man United called out on PSR

Liverpool’s record-breaking signing of Florian Wirtz has their Premier League rivals scared for the next campaign.

Newcastle are linked with Brighton’s star striker João Pedro to provide cover for Alexander Isak and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, but they don’t have the luxury of PSR room.

Manchester United are set for an expensive summer after signing Wolves’ Matheus Cunha for £65m and competing with Spurs for Bryan Mbeumo.

Liverpool have got their business done early, spending over £100m on Wirtz, but it’s the PSR situation at Anfield and Old Trafford that is catching the eye.

Newcastle ‘frustrated’ with Liverpool’s business

Writing for i News, Mark Douglas has claimed that PSR is broken for clubs such as Newcastle and Aston Villa, while those above continue to spend.

Manchester City have also spent big on several new faces already, with those trying to break that dominance left behind.

Douglas wrote: “Liverpool and Man City are spending big, causing palpitations among supporters at St James’ Park, where progress over deals is much slower.

“But they have shared the Premier League title between them since 2018.”

The Reds have led the race to obtain Newcastle’s hero Alexander Isak, who has a £150m price tag, and may go toe-to-toe with the Carabao Cup winners for Marc Guehi.

The Magpies have been quiet in the summer since the departure of their sporting director, Paul Mitchell, and losing any players to Liverpool would leave them raging.

Newcastle secured Champions League football on the last day of the Premier League campaign, despite losing to Everton, but they are not able to match the spending power of the Reds.

Man United challenge Liverpool for signings despite PSR concerns

Ruben Amorin and Arne Slot could also fight for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, despite a 14-place gap between the bitter rivals.

Ekitke had 23 goal involvements in 33 games in the Bundesliga and could be available for about £60m.

Hot-property Viktor Gykores is another transfer target for United that Liverpool wanted, but it isn’t his preference to join the Red Devils.

The search for a prolific goal-scoring striker has troubled both clubs, including Arsenal, whose fans are frustrated by the lack of signings.

Bringing in world-class players to Anfield has been a breeze, with Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong signing, and Milos Kerkez to make it three.

Darwin Nunez could leave in the next window after barely featuring in the squad this year.

With Luis Dias, Andy Robertson, and Jarell Quansah also possibly on their way out, the Reds may be able to afford yet another star signing, with PSR no issue whatsoever.

Spare a thought for Newcastle fans, who have been left far from happy watching the dominance at Anfield.
