Liverpool ‘could be set for major change’ amid big Newcastle development

Paul Mitchell has left his role as Newcastle United’s sporting director after just one season without making any first-team signings.

The 43-year-old replaced Dan Ashworth at the Magpies following a successful three years in the same role at Monaco.

Eddie Howe’s nephew Andy Howe, assistant head of first-team recruitment, and chief scout Steve Nickson have taken over Mitchell’s duties.

It could spell trouble for Liverpool, as Newcastle hunt for a replacement.

Liverpool’s Julian Ward could replace Mitchell

The Daily Mail reported on 17 June that Julian Ward could be a surprise candidate for the Newcastle job, and interviews are due to take place.

Ward became the technical director for Fenway Sports Group last year after leaving Liverpool as sporting director in 2023 to take a break from football.

During the Englishman’s time in charge in 22/23, Alexis Mac-Allister signed for £35m, and Dominik Szoboszlai joined for £60m.

The 44-year-old first joined the Reds in 2012 following his departure from Man City as their European scouting manager for Spain and Portugal.

Across FSG, Ward is responsible for player development and the loan department, as well as having oversight of Liverpool’s academy.

FSG need a solution for Ward emergency

FSG must keep a close eye on candidates for the Newcastle job, as they could be potential recruits for the Reds.

Nottingham Forrest’s Ross Wilson and former Arsenal assistant sporting director Jason Ayto are other names rumoured for the Newcastle job.

Ashworth could rub salt in the wounds for Man United fans should he join the Anfield side following his somewhat unsuccessful spell there.

Ward is crucial for Liverpool’s push to be a part of a multi-club model, where FSG would have stakes in multiple football clubs around the world.

Man City are a part of the City Group, who own Girona and New York City F.C.

The Citizens could have priority if they are signing players from certain clubs within the group, as well as having increased connectivity with foreign leagues.

Arne Slot’s side need to be an economically sustainable club so they can sign players like Florian Wirtz for record fees.

FSG must think fast to draw up names to prepare for a Ward exit.
