Liverpool submit offer to beat Newcastle in race to sign defender

Liverpool are pulling no punches in the early stages of the 2025 summer transfer window.

The Reds kicked off proceedings with the addition of Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.

Arne Slot and Co. are also expected to complete a second signing from the Bundesliga outfit, in the form of 22-year-old superstar Florian Wirtz.

The Premier League champions are now rumoured to have joined the race for another exciting talent, as they continue to assemble a squad prepared to defend their title next year.

Liverpool make offer for Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal

The Reds are reported to have handed Rennes an offer for defender Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal.

Boudlal, 19, impressed on loan with Ligue 2 side Amiens in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, featuring nine times for Les Licornes as they finished 11th in the French second-tier.

According to Sportle360, Liverpool have handed the defender a concrete offer, despite Newcastle already meeting the teenager in person.

Ligue 1 sides OGC Nice and Lille also harbour an interest in Boudlal’s services, alongside two La Liga clubs.

The Moroccan enjoyed his footballing education with Rennes and is under contract at Roazhon Park until 2028, which means the ball is firmly in French outfit’s court.

Arne Slot continues his pursuit of young talent

One thing has become perfectly clear during the opening innings of the 2025 summer transfer window: Liverpool are willing to splash the cash on budding starlets.

Frimpong, 24, and Wirtz, 22, fit that profile perfectly, which shows that Slot is planning not just for next season, but for multiple years down the line at Anfield.

This is a wise approach, which allows the Reds to enjoy their signings as they enter the prime years of their respective careers.

It also increases the resale value of their purchases, which allows the club to stay healthy financially.

Boudlal probably won’t be targeted as a recruit to have much impact on their starting 11 next term but could grow in stature and have increased involvement on the Reds’ performance in future campaigns.

However, Newcastle may have something to say before Liverpool can be certain of capturing the 19-year-old’s signature.
