Alan Shearer names surprise Liverpool star in team of the season

Liverpool secured the Premier League title with four games to spare, marking a dream start to Arne Slot’s reign at Anfield.

Since then, their form has dipped; they lost to Chelsea, drew with Arsenal, and then lost to Brighton.

Slot’s side will look to end the season positively when they host Crystal Palace on the final day.

As we approach the end of the season, team of the season debates are in full swing, with pundits offering their picks for the campaign’s standout players.

Premier League legend Alan Shearer offered his opinions, selecting four Reds players in his team of the season.

Liverpool’s quartet make Shearer’s team of the season

The four Liverpool players named in Shearer’s team of the season were Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, and Mohamed Salah.

The biggest surprise in the selection was Mac Allister, with several strong candidates missing out in his place.

Standout performers like Morgan Rogers and Bruno Guimarães were among those who could have made the cut.

Speaking to the Premier League website (May 21), Shearer gave his thoughts on why he picked Mac Allister.

“He has made great strides under Arne Slot, hardly missing a match, and is the engine that has powered the champions. His dominance in midfield is a big reason why Liverpool have been so good. He nudges out the excellent Morgan Rogers,” said the 54-year-old.

The former Newcastle striker also shared his thoughts on the three other Liverpool players who made the team.

“Every team that wins the title has to have a brilliant goalkeeper at the top of his game, and Alisson has been just that for Liverpool. If he’d played every match, he’d surely have been competing for the Golden Glove award with the likes of Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels, who’s also been superb this season,” said Shearer about Allison.

“Imperious and unflappable as always, even when there was so much uncertainty about whether this would be his last season at Liverpool. He put that to bed by signing a new contract in April, just a few days after taking his team to the brink of the title with a last-gasp winner against West Ham. Despite a great season for Dan Burn, there’s no way I can leave Van Dijk out,” said Shearer about Van Dijk

“The easiest decision of them all. Has a player ever had a better Premier League season? With 46 goal involvements, the Golden Boot, a winners’ medal around his neck and surely more awards surely to come, Salah has shone brightest. Jacob Murphy won’t be too upset about being my next in line,” said Shearer about Salah.

Liverpool’s transfer targets ahead of next season

Fresh off their Premier League title win, Arne Slot and the Liverpool board are already planning reinforcements, especially with key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold set to leave the club.

Jeremie Frimpong has reportedly passed his medical, while Milos Kerkez also looks likely to join the Dutchman at Anfield next season.

These signings could help the champions build momentum as they aim to defend their title, with several rivals already active in the market.

Liverpool will also aim to build on their successes this season and strengthen their challenge in the cup competitions next year.
