Gary Neville breaks off Liverpool v Arsenal coverage to slam ‘absolute scandal’

Liverpool hosted Arsenal at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday in a game selected for Sky Sports coverage.

The Reds returned to Anfield for the first time since being crowned top-flight champions via a 5-1 win over Tottenham on 27 April.

But Arne Slot’s men were determined to put things right after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea last time out.

Neville distracted by Nottingham Forest ‘scandal’ while covering Liverpool

Ahead of kickoff at Anfield, Gary Neville was distracted by the fact that Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis went on the pitch and had a go at Nuno Espirito Santo after his side drew 2-2 with Leicester City.

Instead of continuing to discuss Liverpool on Sky Sports Main Event [11 May, 4.29pm], Neville said: “I was going to talk about the full-backs, but I feel compelled to mention what the Forest owner has just done at the City Ground is scandalous.

“If I was Nuno I’d be having a strong word with him. That’s an absolute scandal. He’s just qualified for European football. It’s an absolute joke.”

The former Manchester United man then went on to talk about Andy Robertson before Liverpool’s encounter with Arsenal got underway.

Slot made bold selection calls against Arsenal

The fact that the Merseyside giants have already won the Premier League title allows Slot to experiment with his side without being under any pressure.

But there were risks attached to doing so against second-place Arsenal, who are still vying to secure their Champions League status.

Mikel Arteta’s men also headed to Anfield with a point to prove, as they will look to establish themselves as more serious title contenders next season, especially after reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

However, Slot made the somewhat brave call to select Conor Bradley over Trent Alexander-Arnold amid the Liverpudlian’s upcoming move to Real Madrid.

The Dutchman’s decision to leave Alexander-Arnold out of his starting lineup could have increased the ill-feeling towards the 26-year-old from Reds supporters.

Meanwhile, Slot also opted to keep homegrown talent Curtis Jones in his starting 11, therefore leaving the ever-reliable Alexis Mac Allister on the substitute’s bench at Anfield.
