Joe Gomez ‘handed major boost by Liverpool transfer setback’

Joe Gomez was only able to play a small part in Liverpool’s Premier League title success as a result of a hamstring injury.

The 15-cap England international has been unable to establish himself under Arne Slot, after being a regular feature in Jurgen Klopp’s last season at Anfield.

Gomez has been able to make just six Premier League starts this season, and was injured early on as Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Plymouth at Home Park in the FA Cup (9 February).

The defender has not managed to feature for a full 90 minutes since Slot’s men beat Leicester 3-1 in the Premier League at Anfield on Boxing Day (26 December).

Chelsea set to beat Liverpool to Dean Huijsen signing

As the Reds look to bolster their squad ahead of next season, the Merseyside giants have set their sights on a move for Bournemouth’s Huijsen.

However, according to TEAMtalk (7 May), Chelsea are also interested in the Spain international and have offered him a more tempting financial package than the Anfield club.

The report adds that a move to Liverpool is not completely off the table, but the 20-year-old is sold on the project presented to him by Enzo Maresca’s side.

Huijsen stumbling block is good news for Gomez

Huijsen would be a top-quality signing for Liverpool if the North West outfit can acquire his services this summer.

Huijsen has been top class for Bournemouth this term

The Bournemouth man has emerged as one of the best defenders in the Premier League in his first season in the English top-flight since joining from Juventus last summer.

He scored in the Cherries’ 2-1 Premier League victory against Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday (3 May), further showcasing his ability to the high-profile suitors his services have attracted.

But if Liverpool miss out on signing the 20-year-old and Chelsea instead land his services, it will come as good news for Gomez.

If Slot signs Huijsen this summer, perhaps the first defender he would look to sell to pave the way for the Bournemouth man would be Gomez.

The England international has missed the majority of the Reds’ Premier League games courtesy of his injury, while he already sits behind the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Jarell Quansah in Slot’s pecking order.
