David Ornstein: Liverpool can now pocket transfer fee from Alexander-Arnold exit

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, amid heavy links to Real Madrid.

The England international confirmed his Anfield exit with a lengthy speech to the Reds fans, which he posted on social media.

The 26-year-old’s deal with the Reds runs out at the end of June.

David Ornstein claims Madrid could pay for Alexander-Arnold’s arrival

Speaking to NBC Sports Soccer, David Ornstein claimed that the right-back will be signing a six-year deal with Los Blancos.

It’s understood that things are yet to be finalised with Madrid despite him announcing his departure from Liverpool.

Also, despite his contract running out at the end of June, if Real Madrid want him for the Club World Cup, which begins on 15 June, they would have to pay a transfer fee to the Reds.

It’s unclear, as things stand, if that is what they’re considering.

Ornstein said: “My understanding from contacts in the Spanish capital is that it will be a six-year contract and that’s what’s being proposed.

“If they want him for the Club World Cup, for example, they would have to pay Liverpool.

“As things stand, I don’t know of any conversations around that.”

Michael Edwards must find the ideal replacement for Liverpool

Alexander-Arnold’s departure from Liverpool leaves a significant void at right-back, given his unique playmaking ability and leadership as vice-captain.

However, Michael Edwards, known for his shrewd, data-driven signings during his previous tenure as Reds’ sporting director, is likely already working on a replacement, especially with Richard Hughes now in the role.

While Conor Bradley has shown potential, highlighted by his standout performance against Real Madrid in 2024, expecting him to immediately fill Alexander-Arnold’s shoes risks stunting his development under immense pressure.

Instead, it makes strategic sense to sign a more experienced right-back in their prime, aged 26-28, who can handle the demands of a title-challenging side.

Such a signing would provide stability, allow Bradley to grow as a rotational option, and ensure Liverpool maintain their competitive edge while integrating new tactical dynamics under Arne Slot.
