Liverpool told striker to sign instead of Newcastle’s Alexander Isak

Liverpool are edging closer to getting their hands on the Premier League trophy after a strong debut season under Arne Slot.

Although the Reds have had a strong season, there have been plenty of suggestions that it has been down to other sides’ failures rather than their own success.

With that in mind, Slot will already be thinking about the summer transfer window and how he can add to his team in the hope of pushing even further next term.

Liverpool given new transfer target

There have been plenty of nerves at Anfield throughout the season so far over the future of certain players with contracts expiring in the summer.

Although Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to leave Merseyside, Mohamed Salah has now committed his future to Liverpool with Virgil van Dijk expected to follow suit.

Salah may have been in terrific form this term but with the likes of Darwin Nunez linked with a move away, Slot is looking to bring in a striker to help the attacking efforts of his side.

Alexander Isak is one man who has been linked with the Reds for some time now after an incredibly successful season with Newcastle United.

Nevertheless, because he is under contract, his current side are said to be putting an extremely high price tag on his name in the hope of keeping him at St James’.

It’s yet to be seen whether the Merseyside outfit are going to try for the striker or turn their attentions elsewhere in the summer.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (16 April, 12:52pm), Danny Murphy suggested a different option for Liverpool as he said: “They’re going to bring in a striker. I’m not sure they’ll go all out on Isak because that’s going to cost them a fortune, even if he wanted to go there. I’m not sure that’s going to happen.

“But there’s some good strikers out there, I was talking earlier about Jonathan David. I mean his goalscoring record, I know it’s in France, incredible. And he’s on a free. There’s a lot of good strikers out there, not just Isak.”

Slot may need to be creative in Liverpool striker search

It’s no surprise that Isak is being eyed up by Liverpool, given his form, he is one of the hottest properties in football right now.

However, Newcastle are not prepared to let him go for a reasonable price and, as Murphy points out, even if he wanted a move it wouldn’t make a deal any easier to strike.

With that in mind, the Reds may need to be prepared to look elsewhere rather than wasting too much time pining after a non-starter.

Joao Pedro is another said to be on the radar but Brighton are seemingly following in Newcastle’s lead with their high price tag.

Therefore, Slot could take a risk and go for a less established striker with the hope of building him up in the top flight.

David has a strong goal return in Ligue 1 and on a free transfer, it could well be a risk worth taking that could seriously pay off in the long run.

The first option is rarely the answer but Slot needs to be prepared to enter a striker search with an open mind otherwise, he will risk lacking options next season.
