Virgil van Dijk shares progress in brand new Liverpool contract talks update

Liverpool are still cruising towards the Premier League title despite defeat against Fulham on Sunday, with contract talks taking centre stage.

The noise surrounding the future of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah has been constant throughout the season.

Alexander-Arnold is reportedly set to leave Anfield for a move to Real Madrid, but the futures of Van Dijk and Salah are yet to be decided.

Van Dijk shares huge contract update

Liverpool have been having an excellent season under Arne Slot and therefore, contract discussions have been able to take a back seat.

However, as the end of the campaign draws closer to an end and the Reds look to be in a poor run of form, the discussions have quickly come to the forefront.

After Slot’s men lost against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Liverpool captain Van Dijk was quick to express his frustration with a lack of movement on a new contract.

Meanwhile, the defender was also pictured talking to PSG chiefs, which certainly raised some eyebrows.

After recently saying he expected news to come in the upcoming weeks, Van Dijk has given a further update suggesting that his future may be clear sooner rather than later.

Speaking via The Times (7 April), the Dutchman said: “There is progress, yeah.”

However, when asked whether progress means staying put at Anfield, he replied: “I don’t know, we’ll see.

“I love the club, I love the fans, and today they were there for us again, and we wanted to reward them, but I want them to be there again on Sunday and make the stadium an amazing venue, like always, for us.”

Liverpool need to put transfer sagas to bed

Liverpool are still sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table, with their lead at 11 points after losing at Craven Cottage.

However, the pressure is already being put on Slot to perform next season with suggestions that the campaign would not have been so easy for his side had it not been for bad luck at Arsenal.

Liverpool are still on track for the Premier League title.

It was unrealistic to think that all three out-of-contract players would stay put in Merseyside and there has been debate over who is the most important player, with the answer generally being van Dijk or Salah.

The Reds need their strongest characters to carry them through a dip in form, and as captain, van Dijk certainly fits that description.

Therefore, Slot needs to make sure that his side get these deals sorted and end the season on a high.
