Danny Murphy makes ‘bizarre’ admission after what he heard about Liverpool fans

Liverpool will need their fans to be in fine voice as they prepare to return to Premier League action with a Merseyside Derby on Wednesday.

Although the season has been overwhelmingly positive under Arne Slot, the Reds have had a difficult period of late.

Ahead of the international break, Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League and then lost the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United.

As the squad prepares to return from international duty and focus on domestic football again, it has now been reported that Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season and join Real Madrid.

Danny Murphy hits out at Liverpool fans

The matter of contracts has been something hanging over Liverpool throughout the season so far with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah also out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Discussions have taken a back seat throughout the season so far and as the Reds have stormed to the top of the Premier League table, losing just one league game on their way, the positivity has blocked out too many concerns.

However, Alexander-Arnold’s potential exit has rubbed lots of supporters up the wrong way who argue that the right-back should have made his intentions known sooner so Liverpool could have cashed in on him instead of losing him for free.

Some supporters have even taken to burning their Liverpool shirts with his name on the back.

However, Danny Murphy has warned supporters about their behaviour when Alexander-Arnold returns from injury as he said live on talkSPORT (26 March, 10:14): “Well, it’ll be interesting to see if he plays again because I don’t know how bad the injury is but I think he’s going to be fit in time to play more games.

“I’d be amazed if he got a bad reception, I would. Knowing the Liverpool fans like I do, I’d be absolutely amazed.

“Yeah [it would disappoint me], yeah. But I think the good will outweigh the few minority that want to give him any stick. I can’t see it. I heard someone call up yesterday and say they’d boo him and I find that bizarre. 10 years he’s given.”

Liverpool can’t afford to take their eye off the ball

There have been smiles at Anfield throughout the season so far, understandably and sitting 12 points clear at the top of the table is a comfortable position for Liverpool to be in.

However, there has to be some nerves going into the final stretch of the season after some of Liverpool’s performances of late.

They were completely outplayed by Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, and Paris Saint-Germain proved they had the quality to see them off too.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a Liverpool regular.

There have been accusations this season that Liverpool are only in pole position because of bad luck at Arsenal rather than any talent in their squad, and Slot’s men need to prove that this is not the case.

With that in mind, Liverpool supporters need to throw all of their support behind their players upon a return to Anfield, and that has to extend to when Alexander-Arnold returns from the sidelines.

The right-back has done plenty for his side over the last number of seasons and the outcome of his future won’t be changed by some boos.

A toxic atmosphere could, however, have an effect on the squad and how well they end the season, which could put the title at risk.
