Leeds move for Kelleher given seal of approval as Liverpool exit beckons

Caoimhin Kelleher remains keen on leaving Liverpool in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Irishman has been with the Liverpool senior team since 2019, managing to climb up the ranks and become Alisson’s backup at Anfield.

Over six years, Kelleher has made just 65 appearances for Liverpool, being a reliable backup, but never able to dislodge the Brazilian.

With Kelleher looking to move away from Anfield for regular playing time, Leeds United appear to be circling as they push to return to the Premier League.

Kelleher to Leeds United approved

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has given his seal of approval for Kelleher’s possible move to Elland Road.

However, Robinson also pointed out that Kelleher will only sign for Leeds if they achieve Premier League promotion, as they sit top of the Championship with eight games remaining.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, he said: “That’d be a great signing.

“You’re only getting Kelleher if you guarantee him first-team football. So he’s not going to come to Leeds and be in the same situation. He would be a great signing.

“He’d certainly be an upgrade. I think the experience that he’s got in the Premier League, the big games that he’s already played in. And it’s going to be time for him to move on.”

With the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili next season, the competition is about to get tougher.

If Kelleher stays at Liverpool, he could slip further down the pecking order as Alisson and Mamardashvili compete for the starting spot.

Leaving the Reds may be the best option for the Ireland international, and a move to Leeds will surely help him gain valuable playing minutes at the best time of his career.

Liverpool spoilt for choice next season at Anfield

The Reds signed Mamardashvili last summer from Valencia and loaned him back for one season. The Georgian keeper has garnered praise in La Liga, becoming one of the top keepers in the league.

Now, he has a chance to showcase his flair in the English Premier League, but he faces stern competition.

Alisson has been Liverpool’s undisputed number one and the league’s best keeper by some distance, conceding just 18 goals in the league, keeping nine clean sheets this season.

Alisson and Mamardashvili both deserve to be the starting choice, and the two keepers are about to give a major selection headache to Arne Slot.

It is the kind of selection headache that managers love to have, but Slot could make it easier by sanctioning a possible exit for Kelleher already.
