Virgil Van Dijk exit: PSG twist emerges after major Liverpool update

Virgil van Dijk could leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

The Reds captain is out of contract at the end of the season and is free to negotiate with foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement.

After the Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain (11 March) that saw the Anfield outfit exit the competition, he was spotted talking to executives from the French club.

The Dutchman’s recent comments that there will be an update before the end of the season had increased speculation surrounding his future but there is no resolution either way right now.

PSG not in Van Dijk negotiations despite reports

Despite the continuing noise about Van Dijk’s future at Liverpool, PSG are not in negotiations with the 33-year-old.

Reports had emerged on 17 March that the Parisians had made an offer to the Dutch international’s camp, one that the Reds would struggle to match.

However, TNT Sports and RMC reporter Julien Laurens (18 March) has dismissed those claims, saying that the talks spotted after the clash were solely about the two matches rather than a transfer.

Liverpool need to sort Van Dijk contract

A bizarre situation could be set to unfold in the final few weeks of the campaign, Van Dijk could lift the Premier League title and then leave the L4 outfit almost immediately after.

It is unfathomable that the Reds would let the Dutchman leave while he is still at the peak of his powers, terrorising attackers on a weekly basis.

The former Southampton star has made it clear that his intention is to stay on Merseyside, now it is up to the hierarchy at Anfield to agree terms with the veteran.

Fenway Sports Group must recognise the impact that Van Dijk has had on the team and reward him with the deal that he deserves, even if it breaks their strict wage structure.

If the Reds lose Van Dijk, as well as Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, it will make the rebuild that is due to happen this summer much harder and may leave Arne Slot unable to compete for the title next season.
