Mohamed Salah ‘not worth it’ as huge new contract update emerges at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has caught the headlines for all the wrong reasons at Liverpool in recent weeks.

Although he has been prolific throughout his time on Merseyside, Salah has found himself in a position at Anfield where he is entering the final months of his contract with no idea of what comes next.

Salah is the main reason why Liverpool are cruising towards the Premier League title already, but he is facing scrutiny after the Reds crashed out of the Champions League and lost the Carabao Cup final.

Cundy delivers Salah contract verdict

It has been a tough week for Liverpool who have suddenly found themselves with only the Premier League title to win this season.

Although they narrowly won the first leg, the Reds crashed out of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain on 11 March, losing a penalty shootout.

This was followed up by a Carabao Cup final defeat against Newcastle United on Sunday in which Liverpool were outplayed at Wembley.

While Salah is usually the shining light for Liverpool, he has fallen away in recent games, failing to attempt a shot or create a chance in the cup final.

Jason Cundy has not held back in his analysis of his contract situation, claiming it may be best not to extend his deal after recent developments.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (17 March, 22:09), Cundy said: “He did not turn up against PSG in both legs, didn’t turn up again yesterday [against Newcastle].

“I’m not blaming him solely but if you’re going to splash out the thick end of £400,000 a week on a three-year contract, that’s rumoured to be what he wants. What we have seen in the last four or five games, I can see why he’s not in that contract.

“I can see it because you don’t have a crystal ball. He’s now 32 going on 33 so are they going to give him that contract because, we know his physique is amazing, we know how professional he is but we don’t know what he’s going to look like in a year and a half time.

“All I’m saying is you don’t have a crystal ball, you don’t know what they’re going to turn into. I’m just saying, I can see why they haven’t.

“Based on what we’ve seen in the last two big games, the last three big games. He ain’t worth it is what I’m saying.”

Liverpool have to sort out their future

He may be their star player, but Salah has certainly not shown up for Liverpool in the past few games despite them being massive.

However, Cundy’s argument seems a bit extreme too given just how well Salah has done this term and the numbers he has registered in the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah’s Premier League form this season.

What you can understand is why the Reds may be keen to negotiate the deal that is being put on the table from Salah’s side in the hope of trying to protect themselves more.

Although he is a top player, the 32-year-old’s standards are inevitably going to drop at some stage but if Liverpool can be in a position where they have a successor coming through at the same time, they could get the best of both worlds.

After a dismal week, there is going to be added pressure on Liverpool to perform next season and for Slot to prove that his side are the best in the Premier League.

If the Merseyside outfit want the best chance at doing so, they must lock down Salah on a new contract as a minimum.
