Liverpool fans in shock over surprise Arne Slot ‘gamble’ v PSG

Arne Slot has made three changes to his Liverpool starting XI for the second leg of their round of 16 Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

The Dutchman has chosen to stick with most of the players who beat Southampton 3-1 last time out with the Reds looking to add to their 1-0 goal lead from their victory last Wednesday.

The Reds may be ahead on aggregate but unless they can get another goal or two in the Champions League tie, things could go south quickly.

However, the decision that Slot has made on Curtis Jones seems to have left some supporters confused ahead of the clash.

Liverpool make three changes for PSG tie

The three changes that have been made by Slot from their game against Ivan Juric’s men are that Jones, Kostas Tsimkas and Darwin Nunez have all been dropped.

With Andy Robertson, Alexis Mac Allister and Diogo Jota all coming into the starting XI to replace them.

Cody Gakpo has also found himself making a return to the first-team squad after missing the last couple of games through injury.

This has left Mohamed Salah, Jota and Luis Diaz to lead the line to try and book the Reds’ place in the quarter-finals.

Jones decision leaves Liverpool fans baffled

Slot’s decision to bench Jones despite the performances he’s put in for Liverpool over the last couple of weeks has left some supporters concerned on social media.

One fan said that “Jones changed the game last week” while another chipped in and said, “Slot has gambled again” while replying to a comment about Jones not starting.

The 2024/25 season has been one where Jones has seemed to come into his own and prove his worth to the Reds.

When Jurgen Klopp was at the helm, the midfielder was one of the first names on the teamsheet but with the form of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister this term, he’s often been left on the bench.

Even with this in mind, you’d have thought that his recent performances against Southampton and Newcastle would have been enough for him to earn a starting spot.

However, Slot has chosen the same team which faced the Ligue 1 outfit last time out which has resulted in the omission of Jones.

There’s no knowing how the tie will end up but Slot will be hoping that his decision to bench Jones doesn’t backfire as the Reds want to advance into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
