Paul Merson says ‘Arsenal are finished’ in new Liverpool prediction

Liverpool are now 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds picked up another three points at Anfield on Saturday after coming from behind to beat Southampton 3-1.

Liverpool supporters won’t often be seen cheering for Manchester United, but their point against Arsenal on Sunday means the Reds need just 16 points from their remaining games to win the title.

Paul Merson makes new Liverpool claim

Arne Slot has shocked everyone with just how well he’s fitted into life at Anfield and it seems all but certain that he will be bringing the title back to Merseyside this season.

The Reds have lost just one of their Premier League games this term and have shown the ability to pull results out, even when they haven’t been at their best levels.

Although it has looked likely that Liverpool will win the title for some time now, a draw for Arsenal against a Manchester United side that has struggled this term may prove to be another turning point.

When asked if the title race is now over, Merson admitted live on Sky Sports Main Event (9 March, 18:50): “Yeah. I mean fifth in the league are nearer to Arsenal than what Arsenal are to first.

“I mean, I’d be saying now we’ve got to concentrate on getting into the top four. They’re too far away. Liverpool have got to lose virtually half of their football matches, they’ve lost one all season.

“It’s not going to happen. The league’s over, it’s finished.”

Slot set for trophy in first Liverpool season

Apart from his outburst during the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park, Slot has shown to be a fairly measured man throughout his first season in the Premier League.

With that in mind, you can imagine that the boss won’t be letting his side ease up until the title is confirmed mathematically.

Although, as Merson says, it would take a complete turnaround and collapse for the Reds not to win the title now given how strong their form has been throughout the season.

There have been some suggestions that Arsenal’s misfortunes with injury this term have been the reason why Liverpool have been so dominant, but their draw against Manchester United certainly cannot be blamed on their lack of fitness.

Not only are the Merseyside outfit looking towards the Premier League trophy but they also face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday (16 March) as Slot looks to bring his first piece of silverware to Anfield.
