Paul Merson makes Liverpool gaffe live on Sky Sports – ‘Sorry’

Liverpool seem to be well on their way to winning the Premier League title this season, although Paul Merson was left apologising after his gaffe live on Sky Sports.

Arne Slot has taken no time to adapt to life in Merseyside and with his side sitting 13 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, it does look unlikely that anyone will be catching them.

However, with conversations of whether the race has already been concluded increasing, the Reds will have to keep their nerve until the end of the season.

Paul Merson left apologising after Liverpool gaffe

Slot will be keen for his side not to be listening to any outside conversations surrounding the Premier League title race but similarly, his team must feel in a relatively strong position ahead of the end of season run in.

Having lost just one game this season, there is no denying that it has been a dominant display from the Merseyside outfit.

As a result, the discussion of whether the title race is over and if Liverpool can book their open bus tour was brought up live on Sky Sports News (1 March, 12:08pm).

When asked for his input on the subject, Merson responded: “What when they book it?” which gathered a laugh from everyone in the studio.

He replied “sorry” when it was pointed out by presenter Simon Thomas that he wanted his thoughts on Liverpool’s title race itself.

“It’s about how many points they get now,2 Merson added. “They just need to keep concentrating and performing.

“They’ve been outstanding. As long as they tick along they’ll be alright. They can afford three or four slip-ups, not that they’ll want that to happen.”

Liverpool have all eyes on Premier League title

While they may not want to admit it yet, the Premier League title is Liverpool’s to throw away this season.

As Merson says, the Reds just need to keep their heads down and remain focused on their own challenges this term, rather than what is being discussed outside of Merseyside.

They certainly can afford slip-ups but given their impressive form, the manager will be incredibly keen to keep the standards high and see out the rest of the campaign as well as they have done in the remainder of the campaign.

The Premier League can throw all sorts in the way so the discussions of an open bus tour will no doubt remain off the table at Anfield until anything is mathematically confirmed but that surely won’t be too much longer now.

Slot has managed the transition from a previously well-loved manager exceptionally and if he can bring the title to Merseyside, he will rightly gain plenty of plaudits.

With the Champions League and Carabao Cup on the table, too, the Dutchman could solidify his name in Liverpool history very soon.

However, for now, the key is to take it one step at a time.
