Shearer shares what he’s heard about Isak for Liverpool v Newcastle EFL Cup final
Alexander Isak was a notable absentee as Liverpool beat Newcastle United and Alan Shearer has shared an update before the teams renew rivalries in the EFL Cup final this month..
The Reds ran out 2-0 winners over the Magpies on Wednesday (26 February), a result that left Liverpool 13 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
Isak, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool, missed the fixture at Anfield with a groin injury and Newcastle were shot-shy in his absence.
It has raised questions about whether the Sweden striker will be free to face Liverpool for the showpiece fixture at Wembley on 16 March.

Aleksander Isak injury update emerges ahead of the EFL Cup final
Isak is the Magpies’ top goalscorer this season with 19 goals and has been clutch for the North East side in their pursuit of European football next season.
The 25-year-old is a key cog for Eddie Howe’s men and his absence would be a huge boost to Liverpool’s chances of winning the trophy against Newcastle.
Season | Goals |
2022-23 | 10 |
2023-24 | 25 |
2024-25 (till 1st March 2025) | 21 |
His injury did pose some questions over his involvement in the EFL Cup final as Newcastle eye their first piece of silverware under the new Saudi Arabian ownership.
Speaking to The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer shared some exciting news regarding Isak.
He said: “From what I’m hearing, he’s going to be fine for the final.
“I guess that’s what Eddie has to factor in over his next two weekends. Newcastle have got Brighton in the FA Cup and, I think, West Ham on the Monday evening.
“If there’s a 2% even chance with a doubt about someone then I guess he’s going to leave them out in prep for the final, and I don’t blame him for that.”

Liverpool on course to create history with Arne Slot
When Jurgen Klopp decided to bid farewell to Liverpool, many wondered if any succeeding manager will ever come close to replicating the German. Klopp guided the Reds to eight trophies, which included one Premier League crown, one Champions League, one FA Cup and two EFL Cups.
Incoming manager Slot had a herculean task on his hands, to fill in the gigantic hole left by Klopp. The Dutchman has not only filled the shoes, he’s gone one step further and is on course to win the Premier League in his first season, something that even Klopp wasn’t able to do.
Only Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Manuel Pellegrini have managed to win the Premier League title in their first season as a PL club manager and Slot is on course to join the elite list.
The Reds also have a chance to secure their first piece of silverware this season as they will face Newcastle in the EFL Cup final. Although the Merseysiders exited the FA Cup after their shock defeat to Championship side Plymouth, they are still in the hunt for European glory, taking on PSG in the round of 16 in the Champions League.
If Liverpool are able to win the league and a cup trophy, Slot’s debut season with Liverpool will be regarded as a huge success.
