Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour in disbelief over what Arne Slot said pre-Man City
Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour have been left shocked by what Liverpool manager Arne Slot said about Darwin Nunez in his pre-Manchester City press conference.
Nunez has been under some intense scrutiny this season due to the amount of chances he’s sent wide of the net.
The same happened again in Liverpool’s most recent Premier League game against Aston Villa when the striker had an open goal but somehow still failed to put it away in the 2-2 draw.
This sparked a reaction from the Dutchman who said that he could accept that Nunez may miss the odd chance here and there but he couldn’t accept the way that the Uruguay international behaved after the missed opportunity.
It was this reaction that didn’t quite sit right with Brazil and Parlour.

Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour don’t agree with what Arne Slot said
Liverpool may have been one of the most dominant teams in the league this season but more can still come from the Merseyside outfit.
While their performances across the campaign have led them to be sitting at the top of the Premier League and Champions League tables, not all the Reds’ players have been quite up to scratch.
And, while Slot’s criticism may well be justified, it feels like it should have been done behind closed doors rather than in the public eye.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (21 February), Brazil and Parlour gave their verdicts on the situation.
“Arne Slot right, his English sounds great but maybe he’s got a different mentality, maybe he didn’t mean that because he’s hammering him there isn’t he,” Brazil said.
To which Parlour replied: “I don’t like that in the press if I’m being honest, I really believe that you should do that behind closed doors, you’ve got to protect your players.”
Darwin Nunez needs to do better for Liverpool
Nunez is one of many options that Slot has to lead his attacking line but more often than not, he’s failed to live up to expectations, barring the odd game here and there such as their 2-0 win over Brentford.
Others such as Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz have also led Liverpool’s attacking line more than once this season but none of the three have been able to hold down their spot in the team consistently or if they have, then they haven’t been prolific enough.
Player | Games played | Goals | Assists |
Darwin Nunez | 34 | 6 | 5 |
Luis Diaz | 11 | 6 | 0 |
Cody Gakpo | 3 | 0 | 0 |
If Nunez wants to create a legacy for himself in Merseyside then he needs to figure out how to consistently find the back of the net, much like he did when he was playing for Benfica before his big-money move.
Only time will tell what the future holds for the Uruguayan but if Slot’s comments are anything to go off of, it doesn’t feel like the attacker fits into the Dutchman’s plans.
