Chris Sutton makes new Premier League favourites claim amid Liverpool ‘Hope’

Chris Sutton revealed he hopes a team like Liverpool wins the Premier League this season but admitted he believes Manchester City will.

The Reds sit five points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side heading into the international break and will host their North West rivals at Anfield on 1 December.

While Manchester City have felt like inevitable league title winners in recent years, Sutton admitted he would like to see Arne Slot win the title in his first season on Merseyside on the Monday Night Club [11 November, 15:43].

He said: “Would I make them favourites? No, no I wouldn’t – start of the season I said Manchester City, I’m still going to go with Manchester City. ‘The wheels seem to be off’, they’re not off, they’ve proved themselves season in [and] season out.

“But, I hope Manchester City don’t win it. Nothing against Manchester City, I’m just bored of them winning it, so I’d like to see Liverpool or Arsenal or even Chelsea win it.”

Can Arne Slot win the Premier League title with Liverpool?

Slot has been a revelation at Liverpool since he succeeded Jurgen Klopp as his side leads the domestic and European league tables.

The prospect of the Dutchman claiming the Premier League title in his maiden season in England would be a monumental feat – one only Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal have managed.

However, while the situation remains, the Reds cannot be ruled out as one of the favourites for a second English crown triumph in four years.

This is partly down to Mohamed Salah’s incredibly high standards, the forward has 10 goals and 10 assists in 17 appearances across all competitions thus far, and the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at Anfield is evidently at the back of his mind.

Ryan Gravenberch is the epitome of the infamous saying “he feels like a new signing” – the Dutchman has emerged as one of the most important players for Slot this year and is one of the most in-form midfielders in Europe.

The importance of a world-class defensive midfielder has never been more paramount, given Manchester City’s recent downfall due to the season-ending injury to Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and Slot should be commended for his work on Gravenberch.

Liverpool fans have been here before – neutrals can speculate on title credentials but the supporters know better than to get carried away and, with so much football yet to be played, the Reds must take each game at a time and leave the talk of titles until the business end of the campaign.
