Liverpool Women reach ‘exciting’ agreement for free travel to all games

Liverpool Women have announced that Expedia has expanded the free transport scheme to include all Women’s Super League matches for the upcoming season.

The Reds announced on their official website (5 August) that the fan initiative, now in its third season, will provide transport from the Wirral and Liverpool city centre for all home and away matches in the WSL.

Matt Beard will aim to improve on the side’s fourth-place finish in the WSL last term, and the announcement marks an exciting chapter for the women’s team after their relocation from Prenton Park to the St. Helens Stadium for the 2024/25 season.

Ben Latty, chief commercial officer at Liverpool FC, said: “We’re so thrilled that Expedia are able to expand this free travel for a third season. It’s meant a lot to our fans and the team.

“Last season we had some memorable away results and it was great that our fans didn’t miss the action by not being able to get there.

“The move to St Helens is an exciting new era for the women’s team and follows the significant investment in the acquisition and redevelopment of the AXA Melwood Training Centre, which has given the players and staff the best facilities possible.”

Liverpool Women to capitalise on growing support for the side

The support in the Liverpool Women’s side is growing by the year, with more and more fans looking to travel to the game to support the team.

Beard will have increased pressure to deliver an improved finish in the WSL this term as the agreement has the potential to bring more eyes to his side than ever before.

The decision to move to the St. Helens Stadium will increase their capacity for home matches by 1,413. The relocation and the free travel will help meet the overflowing demand of support for the club.

An air of excitement has returned to the team for the first time since the back-to-back league title wins in 2013 and 2014. The Reds spent two years out of the WSL following their relegation in 2020 and recorded their highest league finish last term since their return to the top flight in the 2022/23 season.

Fenway Sports Group has shown a statement of intent to back the women’s side, with the club-record purchase of Olivia Smith for £210,000 and the redevelopment of the AXA Melwood Training Centre, the former training ground for the men’s team, to provide Beard’s side with the best facilities possible.

Liverpool are far too aware of the impact supporters can have on the side and the Kop has become synonymous in football with inspiring the side to memorable results over the years.

The women’s side will hope the same can be replicated at the St. Helens Stadium as they look to mount a challenge on Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal this season.
