Liverpool Women stadium rewarded with high-performance pitch amid long-term commitment

St. Helens Stadium has been transformed with a new high-performance pitch for Liverpool Women ahead of the Women’s Super League 2024/25 season.

As per the official liverpoolfc.com website (5 July), the pitch has been transformed with the same playing surface used at the AXA Melwood Training Centre.

Manager Matt Beard spoke on the importance of this upgrade to his side.

He said: “It was wonderful last season to train every day on the fantastic surfaces at the AXA Melwood Training Centre.

“To replicate that at our new home stadium at St Helens is really exciting and we can’t wait to play our first match on it. It’s up to us now to show the supporters what we can do on this superb surface.”

Liverpool continue to invest in the Women’s side

The instalment of a high-performance pitch is another demonstration by Fenway Sports Group of their commitment to the Liverpool Women side.

As per the agreement to share the stadium with St. Helens R.F.C, the rugby league side will play on the pitch first in their match against Castleford Tigers on Friday.

The Reds announced the decision to move to St. Helens in May (liverpoolfc.com, 3 May) leaving Prenton Park home to Tranmere Rovers after six years.

There will be an improved match-day experience for fans as well as enhanced and exclusive player facilities.

FSG have shown their long-term commitment to the Women’s team with a 10-year lease on the stadium.

Following the redevelopment of the Melwood Training Centre as one of the best in the WSL, they increased their home stadium capacity by 1,413 seats with the move.

Which stands as the third highest in the league behind Leicester Women (King Power stadium) and Arsenal Women (Emirates).

It is exciting times for the Reds who continue to make strides on and off the pitch.

The club announced the record signing of forward Olivia Smith for £210,000 last week (Liverpool ECHO, 2 July).

Beard is targeting more signings as he aims to improve on last season’s fourth place finish in the WSL.
