Liverpool to focus on Mohamed Salah succession plan instead of Newcastle ace Anthony Gordon
Dan Bardell believes Liverpool should focus on finding a long-term successor for Mohamed Salah rather than pursuing a move for Newcastle United ace Anthony Gordon.
A report from TeamTALK (2 July) suggested that the Reds were preparing a player-plus-cash deal to sign the England international worth up to £50 million.
The 23-year-old is said to have had his head turned by the negotiations between Liverpool and the Magpies [The Telegraph, 1 July].
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested that Arne Slot’s side should make a move to replace Salah – who plays predominantly on the right – before signing Gordon, though, as that particularly ship has sailed.
Speaking exclusively to Liverpool News, Bardell said: “I’m a massive fan of Anthony Gordon and think he should be starting for England at the Euros.
“He had a terrific season with Newcastle and for a modern-day winger, he gives you everything that you want. He is certainly someone that Liverpool would do well to get and I think he would improve them.
“I just can’t see them splashing out on a left winger with Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota there. Surely the succession plan for Mo Salah on the other side is more important.
“I think we’re past the point where Newcastle have to sell, if they needed to it would have happened before the PSR deadline.”
Liverpool told to move on from Anthony Gordon
There is no doubt that the Englishman is a top talent and would be a superb signing if the Reds can land him this summer.
It is clear that Slot wants to add some sort of attacking midfielder or wide player to his squad amid links to Leeds United Crysencio Summerville (Wiebe de Vries, 4 July).
Gordon is a direct force and causes nightmares for his opposition defenders with his pace and quality on the ball.
There is some criticism of England manager Gareth Southgate for not starting the Newcastle man during the Euros, especially given a perceived weakness down the left-hand side for the Three Lions.
With the Premier League PSR deadline now having passed, Eddie Howe may have assurances that he will be keeping hold of his best players moving into the new season.

This could mean that Slot has to move on and consider other targets this summer with a deal now looking unlikely for Gordon.
Given his nationality and age, the winger would demand a large fee that Liverpool may be unwilling to pay this summer.
