Liverpool Women

Liverpool Women were founded in 1989 as Newton Ladies FC and did not become affiliated with the Reds until 1994.

They were a founding member of the Women’s Super League in 2011 and a year later became the first English club to offer every female player full-time professional contracts.

The Women’s team moved into Melwood, the former Men’s team training ground in late 2023 after the Anfield club bought the land back.

Liverpool Women are currently competing in the Women’s Super League, the highest tier in the Woman’s game after winning promotion in the 2021/22 season.

The Reds have played at St Helens’ Totally Wicked Stadium since the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign after previously Prenton Park, the home of League Two outfit Tranmere Rovers from 2018-2024.

In 1997, the Reds played their first match at Anfield against Everton in a 2-0 loss and the Merseyside derby has been hosted at Anfield annually since 2019.

Liverpool Women manager

Whiteley is interim charge of the Reds after Matt Beard was sacked in February having previously worked with the club.

She was the head coach of the U21s and technical director at the LFC Women Regional Talent Club before stepping up to the position of assistant manager in the 2020/21 season.

She would then serve as the interim head coach when Vicky Jepson departed in January 2021 and was Beard’s assistant after he returned to the club.

Liverpool Women honours

Liverpool Women are currently in the Women’s Super League, the highest tier of the Women’s game in England.

Last season, they secured a fourth-place finish on their return to the division after winning the Championship.

They have two WSL titles, having won the league twice under Beard in 2013 and 2014.
