How much Liverpool could pay Chelsea for Rio Ngumoha as bitter fight continues
Rio Ngumoha could cost Liverpool a pretty penny in the near future.
The 16-year-old became Liverpool’s youngest-ever Premier League goal scorer, surpassing Michael Owen, with his strike against Newcastle.
The last-gasp hero in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Newcastle, Ngumoha, is set to stick around at Anfield in a key squad role this season.
His latest exploits will only rile up his former club, Chelsea, even further.
Liverpool set for tense legal battle with Chelsea
Chelsea banned Liverpool scouts from attending youth matches after Ngumoha joined the Reds last summer.
The relationship between the clubs has been tense ever since, with the Blues keen to take revenge and poach a youth talent back.
The Telegraph's Sam Wallace reported on 26 August that a bitter legal fight is set to ensue between the clubs.
He stated that since no fee has been agreed upon between the rivals, the matter will go to a tribunal that is overseen by the Premier League’s compensation committee.
Liverpool will have to pay multi-million fee for Rio Ngumoha
Fenway Sports Group will have to part with a seven-figure sum for Ngumoha, according to the Mail’s Lewis Steele.
Ngumoha’s heroics at St James’ Park will surely be brought up as evidence of his value to the Stamford Bridge outfit.
However, lawyers for the receiving club have previously argued that developments after the move should not be considered in past tribunals.
Ngumoha's milestones since joining Liverpool:
- January 11 2025: Senior debut in 4-0 FA Cup win against Accrington Stanley
- July/August 2025: Notched two goals and two assists in pre-season
- August 25 2025: Scores first senior goal in all competitions with late winner against Newcastle
The record fee paid at a tribunal for an out-of-contract youth player was when Liverpool were forced to pay £1.5m to Fulham for Harvey Elliott, with a further £2.8m in add-ons in February 2021.
In February 2024, Chelsea were forced to pay an initial fee of £1m for Brighton and Hove Albion talent Shim Mheuka, but that could rise to £4.25m if certain conditions are met.
Surely the Blues will be looking for a higher fee than that for the fourth-youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.
The L4 outfit will not mind whatever the fee is if Ngumoha fulfils his potential, as it will be worth every penny.
