Harvey Elliott's future at Anfield is in significant doubt following a difficult season under Arne Slot.

Elliott, 22, has only started two Premier League games this season, both of which came after Liverpool won the Premier League title.

Liverpool look set to sign German superstar Florian Wirtz, who will compete with Dominik Szoboszlai for the attacking midfield position.

Wirtz's imminent arrival would all but end any hope of the ex-Fulham man locking down a starting role under Slot, and Elliott's latest comments have opened the door for an exit.

Elliott doesn't want to 'waste years' of his career

After Liverpool's 3-2 defeat at Brighton, the Elliott admitted that he needed to decide what's best for his career, sparking rumours of him departing Anfield.

Now, Elliott has doubled down on his stance, stating he doesn't want to waste away years of his career by sitting on the bench.

Talking to HaytersTV ahead of the Under-21 European Championships, the Liverpool midfielder said: "It's just a situation that me and the team have to have a conversation about because I'm coming into an age now where I'm 22, I'm going to be 23 next season.

"I don't really want to be wasting years on my career because it's a short career. You don't know what's going to happen.

"I need to reflect. I need to see if I'm content in doing what I'm doing and how can I improve as a player because that's the most important thing.

"I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that's to go somewhere else, then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make and I just need to see what happens."

Elliott went on to thank fans for all their support, adding: "Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career."

Elliott needs to leave Anfield to progress

Elliott loves Liverpool, and that was clear as he was in tears after the Reds' last game of the season against Crystal Palace.

However, the Englishman isn't in Slot's future plans, with just 821 minutes across 28 appearances in all competitions in 2024/25.

Elliott's choice is simple: he needs to leave Anfield.

Should the ex-Fulham man remain on Merseyside, his minutes could become almost non-existent, similar to Federico Chiesa's situation this season.

Teams in both the Premier League and the Bundesliga are interested in signing Elliott, including Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund would be a great move to help the 22-year-old's development.

The German side have a great record of developing young English talent, including Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho.

Liverpool, meanwhile, would likely recoup a sizeable fee for their young star, with reports suggesting the Reds value Elliott over £40million, which would be crucial in their slow rebuild.

This will likely be a departure that helps both club and player.
