Liverpool Women transfer plan revealed amid record-breaking move

Liverpool have revealed their transfer plan following the reported record-breaking move for Olivia Smith, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Writing on their website (27 June), the publication reported that Matt Beard's side are prioritising a quality over quantity approach to recruitment this summer.

The news comes as reports break of the Reds move for 19-year-old Olivia Smith [BBC Sport, June 27] from Sporting CP.

Liverpool would need to activate her £210,000 release clause, which would break their current transfer record.

Liverpool need to spend to compete in the WSL

The Reds will need to spend if they are to close the gap between themselves and the top three.

Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal have all invested to establish themselves at the top of the WSL.

Chelsea broke the British record-fee with the signing of Levante striker Mayra Ramirez for £385,000 in January.

The potential acquisition of Smith for over £200,000 is a step in the right direction for the Reds.

Next season will mark the first campaign that all 12 WSL are backed by Premier League owners.

The plan is to invest heavily in quality recruits in adverse to numbers and to add more goals to the side.

Sophie Roman Haug was the Reds' top scorer in the WSL last season with seven goals. The league's top goalscorer, Khadija Shaw of Manchester City, scored 21 goals in 18 matches.

Beard's side made incredible improvements last year securing a fourth placed finish. But they will need to add more goals to the side if they are to challenge for the WSL.

It is a challenge that can only be met by spending big to close the gap between the top three.
