Arne Slot Liverpool plan for Cody Gakpo clear after what happened on Saturday
Arne Slot revealed in his first Liverpool press conference that conversations will take place with Cody Gakpo and his position in the team.
Speaking to the press on Friday (5 July), Slot plans to talk to both Gakpo and Trent Alexander-Arnold about where they fit into his plans.
He said: "You cannot judge a player on his own, it's always a team effort. But I do have my opinion about where they're going to play here – but, if you don't mind, I'm going to talk to them about that first and work with them first before telling you."
Gakpo has played mostly as a striker at Liverpool but has been proving his worth playing on the left for the Netherlands. He and Alexander-Arnold will face-off on Wednesday (10 July) for a place at the Euro 2024 final.
Liverpool should be impressed with quiet but impactful Gakpo
The Euro 2024 joint-top goalscorer missed the opportunity to add to his tally on a rare off-night for the Liverpool talisman in their 2-1 quarter-final win over Turkey on 6 July.
He thought he had scored his goal and the one to send the Netherlands through to the semi-final but it was ruled as a Mert Muldur own goal.
Turkey outplayed the Netherlands for the majority of the encounter but it was not to be for Vincenzo Montella.
Gakpo has been a standout performer at Euro 2024 but was neutralised by the Turkish defence.
He was unlucky not to be awarded the Netherlands' second goal but only managed two shots with one on target throughout the match (Sofascore).
The 25-year-old completed 66.67 per cent of his dribbles but attempted six crosses with zero per cent accuracy.
His trademark cut-in from the wing was defended to perfection as he was dispossessed 12 times by Turkey.
Whenever Gakpo did get free, the flag was raised and he was caught offside three times, more than any other player.
Jurgen Klopp struggled to fit Gakpo into his Liverpool side last season, he started in centre-midfield and played across the frontline throughout the campaign (Transfermarkt).
But it is clear that he is at his best playing on the left wing, a position occupied by Luis Diaz.
Given Slot's comments on Friday, it seems that Gakpo will get the chance to play in his preferred position for Liverpool too.
