Mohamed Salah made headlines once again as Liverpool beat Lille 2-1 to stay top of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Salah, 32, scored his first open-play goal in over seven hours of game-time when he scored a sublime opener against the Ligue 1 side at Anfield.

It was Salah's first goal that didn't come via the penalty spot since he netted in the 5-0 win away at West Ham on 29 December.

As the players returned to the pitch for the second half, Amazon commentator Jon Champion and Newcastle legend Shearer joked about Salah's dry spell in front of goal, suggesting that it was quite a long one by his standards.

Speaking on Amazon's live coverage of the game on Tuesday night (09:01pm, 21 January), Champion said: "And with that, he's done what he's done so often before: end a dreadful goal drought of 440 minutes without a goal in open play. What has he been playing at?"

Shearer jokingly replied: "It's terrible, isn't it? How dare he?

"The standards he's set here over these years are incredible and that's what Liverpool needed, that's what Liverpool wanted. It was an excellent finish."

Will Salah sign a new Liverpool contract?

Salah's future at Anfield remains a huge talking point despite his season going from strength to strength with that goal against Lille.

The Egypt forward now has 22 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions this season, as well as 17 assists.

However, his contract expires at the end of the season with Sky Sports reporting that Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal are keen to sign him.

Talks could begin any moment now with Salah in the final six months of his contract, so he could theoretically strike a pre-contract agreement with the Middle Eastern side.
