Update emerges on the transfer of Liverpool star Virgil Van Dijk

Liverpool have not been contacted by Al Nassr in regard to a potential move for Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk, according to the Liverpool ECHO.

Reports emerged on the evening of 13 June that Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr wanted to make the Reds captain the "highest-paid defender in the world" [Marca, June 13.]

With word even spreading, Van Dijk's representatives had already met with the Saudi club before the summer transfer window opened.

These reports have since been rubbished by the Liverpool ECHO's Ian Doyle who reports that Arne Slot and co. are planning on keeping their captain around for the next campaign.

Why Liverpool need Virgil van Dijk

Despite the Dutch giant turning 33 next month, he is still widely regarded as one of the best defenders in world football.

Van Dijk has been key to Liverpool's successes over the years and, especially with Joel Matip's departure now confirmed, the Reds must keep a hold of the centre-back.

He was the one constant in Liverpool's ever-changing defence during the 2023/24 season due to the many injuries Jurgen Klopp's men went through.

Granted, youngster Jarell Quansah stepped up to the plate when called upon, however, he and Van Dijk cannot be solely relied upon.

If Liverpool and Slot wish to make waves across Europe next season and once again challenge for one fo the most prestigious trophies in world football (Champions League) they will need to ensure their best players stay put.

And, in addition to those staying, ensure that the new era under Slot is kick-started with some moves in the transfer market.

A centre-back will likely be high on the priority list due to the club only having three natural centre-backs to choose from.

And, there's no doubt that this could be a player who needs some help developing, much like Leny Yoro, who the Reds have been linked with of late.
