Caoimhin Kelleher shares Liverpool exit admission amid future uncertainty

Caoimhin Kelleher has admitted he wants to leave Liverpool for regular first-team football after the signing of goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Reds confirmed the signing of the Georgian shot-stopper in the final days of the summer transfer window with the 23-year-old remaining in Valencia for the 2024/25 season [Fabrizio Romano].

Kelleher, who Liverpool rejected late approaches for [The Athletic], has broken his silence on his future at the Reds and admitted his desire to leave Anfield.

"I've made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out," said Kelleher, as reported by BBC Sport [9 September].

"The club's made that decision to get another goalkeeper and from the outside looking in, it looks like they've made a decision to go in a different direction."

"Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like that's 100% my decision but at times it's not always in my hands."

"It's been reported that Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. My ambition is clear that I think I'm good enough and I want to go out and prove it."

Liverpool should allow Caoimhin Kelleher to leave

The 25-year-old featured the most times in a single campaign for Liverpool last season, deputising in the absence of Alisson with 26 appearances in all competitions.

Given the injury record of the Brazilian number one, it is unlikely that Liverpool supporters have seen the last of Kelleher between the sticks but the impending arrival of Mamardashvili is a damning reminder that the Northern Ireland international will not inherit the reigns at Anfield.

Kelleher has the quality to be a number one in the Premier League, and, with many years left in his career, he cannot waste his time playing second fiddle at the Reds.

With heroic performances throughout the years in cup competitions, particularly the Carabao Cup, Liverpool owe Kelleher for his commendable service to the club in engineering a permanent move to a Premier League side.

Michael Edwards and co have proven bullish in their approach to sales, Brentford matching the valuation of Sepp van den Berg, who the player admitted himself was too high will not help matters for Kelleher with the Reds demanding £20m for their number two.

However, Kelleher has proved on more than one occasion that his quality merits the valuation, he would be a valuable asset to a Premier League side.
