Liverpool have rejected an approach from Real Madrid for Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to Andy Hunter.

The journalist claimed that the Reds had told the Spanish club that a January move for the right-back was a 'non-starter' in a post on X (31 December).

The 26-year-old is out of contract in the summer and can negotiate with foreign clubs from 1 January but Hunter added that the club has been given no indication that the 26-year-old wants to leave.

Liverpool need to get Alexander-Arnold tied down

The situation surrounding Alexander-Arnold has the potential to become a major distraction as the Reds chase Premier League and Champions League glory.

There has been speculation about Madrid's interest for months with a report emerging on 28 December [Daily Mail] claiming the Spanish club were increasingly confident of signing the player.

Alexander-Arnold is yet to give any public indication of his feelings towards the situation unlike Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk who have indicated that they would like to remain on Merseyside.

The loss of an academy graduate who has gone on to achieve everything with his boyhood club would be a major blow to the Reds.

He is one of the most gifted players in world football with the ball at his feet, so there is no surprise that Los Blancos are interested in his services and trying to unsettle the generational talent.

Arne Slot's side must get their local star tied down to a new deal as soon as possible to avoid any distractions during the run-in.
