Newcastle United asked for Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah in negotiations for Anthony Gordon, according to the Daily Mail.

Writing on their website [29 June], the outlet reported that talks broke down as the Reds did not want to lose Quansah.

The 21-year-old is highly thought of as a future first-team regular at Anfield after shining when called upon last season.

Newcastle were ready to sell Gordon to Liverpool to help the club comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability regulations.

The Magpies need to raise funds by 1 July to avoid potential PSR sanctions.

Forward depth at Liverpool considered a key factor

Liverpool are known to be long-term admirers of Gordon, dating back to his time at Merseyside rivals Everton.

Reports broke on Friday (28 June) via HITC that the Reds had begun talks with Newcastle for Gordon.

But now it seems that a deal is off the table after Newcastle tried to include Quansah in a potential deal.

There is a chance that talks could be revived over the weekend, but fresh reports state that now looks unlikely [This is Anfield, 29 June].

With Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota capable of playing left-wing, the club won't be forced into an unreasonable deal for Gordon.

The signing would be a statement of intent for Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes.

Liverpool Anfield

Currently with the England squad at Euro 2024, Gordon registered 11 goals and 10 assists in the league last season.

Adding another quality addition to the front line would put much-needed pressure on the others to improve.

This deal seems similar to that of the reports of the Reds trying to sign Lille centre-back Leny Yoro. Not a priority in the club's transfer strategy, but an opportunity to be explored.

But a move is now not likely to come to fruition. The Magpies have reportedly offered Alexander Isak to Chelsea in another bid to raise money before the deadline.

If that move fails to materialise, it could force Newcastle back to the table with Liverpool.
