Ally McCoist makes worrying Marc Guehi claim after Liverpool’s £446m summer splurge

Liverpool failed to sign Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool had agreed a deal to sign Guehi, but the plug was pulled, as Crystal Palace could not find a replacement for their captain.

Liverpool have been criticised for how late they left it, and it has been reported that they do not plan to return for his signature in the winter window.

Fenway Sports Group would rather get him on a free next summer, than splash on the cash when he has less than six months left on his deal.

Liverpool could be haunted by failed Marc Guehi pursuit

Liverpool spent approximately £446million in the transfer window, but they did not bring Guehi through the doors.

The likes of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike were brought in for huge sums, but the signing of the England ace could not be completed.

Ally McCoist believes that the failure to sign Guehi could come back to haunt the Reds, if they fail to reach their ambitions this season, in a worrying conclusion.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 1 October (06:13 am), he said: “You look at Ekitike, Wirtz, all of them, all the players that they brought in, it might be the one that they never brought in, that will cost them.”

Whether McCoist is right or not, remains to be seen.

Guehi miss seems even bigger for Liverpool now

The fact that they did not get Guehi seems like an even bigger miss for Arne Slot’s side right now, as they are struggling defensively.

The Reds have conceded 11 goals in nine matches, allowing two goals to their opponents in four of those matches.

Ibrahima Konate has been badly out of form, and does not look like the formidable defender that established a brilliant partnership with Virgil van Dijk last season.

Giovanni Leoni picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury that will keep him out for over a year, so the Reds are lacking depth in the position right now.

Slot can call on Joe Gomez, but his injury record in the last few years does not provide much comfort that he can stay fit consistently, and there is no standout talent in the academy, either.

Meanwhile, Guehi has continued to shine for the Eagles after his move to Anfield fell through, showing no signs of hard feelings about the move not happening.
