Liverpool told where they should play Dominik Szoboszlai after ‘impossible’ developments

Dominik Szoboszlai has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season.

Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz, which was expected to harm Szoboszlai‘s chances of starting, but he has been far better than the German so far.

He has even excelled as a makeshift right-back and scored a wonderful free kick in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Arsenal in August.

However, there is still debate over where his best position is in Arne Slot‘s starting eleven at the moment.

Liverpool News presents the exclusive opinion of iconic football commentator Ian Darke.

Liverpool should play Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back

Liverpool have not been able to rely on Jeremie Frimpong or Conor Bradley, who have both underwhelmed and suffered injury issues this season.

Darke believes that Szoboszlai could be a long-term option at right-back after his recent showings for Slot’s side.

Speaking exclusively to Liverpool News, he said: “He has certainly shown that he has got another string to his bow, it is another option that the manager can take, depending on the assignment and the match situation.

“I think what you have saw from Szoboszlai, is because of the competition for places, he would be one of the players, possibly whose place might be up for grabs, fairly or unfairly, particulatly the way he played last season.

“You have got people playing out of their skin just to get in this team, for those players whose position might be under threat, it is an extra incentive to really turn it one.

“He is such a good football, and good footballers can do that, they can turn their hands to different roles, it looks like he can play that position.

“That may have been part of the thinking, having a player like that back there, we haven’t got Trent [Alexander-Arnold] anymore, but if I want that option for us to create from that position, why not give Dominic a go there?

“It worked, he was man of the match by a long way in that rather dull game against Arsenal. He is making it impossible to leave him out of the team.”

Szoboszlai has notched one goal and two assists, won 3.63 duels per game and made six ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

Arne Slot should seriously consider playing Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Szoboszlai becomes the Reds’ starting right-back, as he brings much more balance than Frimpong or Bradley.

Slot’s side looked a much better outfit once he was shifted there against Crystal Palace in the 2-1 defeat on 27 September, and they looked shaky again when he moved back into midfield.

It remains to be seen whether the Hungarian features in the role as the campaign progresses, but it is definitely a valid option for Slot.
