Arne Slot and Liverpool coaches set to discuss major factor that was ‘a real frustration’ vs Crystal Palace

Liverpool fell to their first defeat of the season as they lost to Crystal Palace in injury time, and it was an unconvincing performance.

Ismaila Sarr scored early on and Palace had several chances, but Liverpool did find a late equaliser through Federico Chiesa.

However, Eddie Nketiah scored right at the death after a long throw to break Liverpool hearts, and Arne Slot was unhappy after the game.

Liverpool found late winners in most of their games this season, but were undone by a late goal on this occasion, and Slot will now look to correct this error.

Arne Slot to fix Liverpool’s set-piece issues

Both of Palace’s goals stemmed from set-pieces, and Liverpool were a mess at the back when trying to deal with both.

Jeremie Frimpong was particularly poor off the bench, and this is not the first time that Liverpool have struggled to deal with set-plays this season.

Liverpool conceded from set-pieces twice in their 4-3 win at Newcastle, and were undone again when defending their box.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, reporter David Lynch highlighted the problem Liverpool have with set-pieces.

“Another element I think will be a discussion amongst the coaching staff, is that they come away from Selhurst Park today, is the fact they conceded from two set pieces,” he stated.

“You think for as good as Crystal Palace were in the first half, and as good as that finish is at the end, the fact is that Crystal Palace generated an unbelievable amount of expected goals over the course of the game, and yet they only scored from two set pieces.

“Liverpool could have gotten away with it, and yet it’s a corner and a throw-in late in the game and that’s how they concede the goals, and that will be a real frustration.”

Liverpool need to improve defensively

Even during Liverpool’s winning run, they were conceding a lot of chances and even a lot of goals, with Bournemouth, Atletico Madrid and Newcastle scoring a combined seven goals.

There were basic errors at the back for both Palace goals, and these could have been avoided. A point at Selhurst Park would not have been the worst result, but conceding late on after a long throw is a huge frustration.

“If you want to compete you need a very positive balance with set-pieces and even more so in this league,” Slot stated after the game.

“It was one of our biggest strengths last season, now we have conceded two against Newcastle and two here.

“But this league is more and more and more about set-pieces.”

Liverpool face a tough run of fixtures now, and they cannot afford to defend so complacently again if they are to last the pace in the title race.
