Alan Shearer picks out Liverpool star who was ‘magnificent’ despite being ‘battered’ vs Crystal Palace
Liverpool lost their 100 per cent record as Crystal Palace beat them 2-1 on Saturday.
Eddie Nketiah’s late strike earned the Eagles all three points, after Federico Chiesa looked to have nabbed a Liverpool equaliser with his 87th-minute effort.
Liverpool’s goal stood despite controversy surrounding Mohamed Salah, and a potential handball in the build-up.
However, Arne Slot‘s side got what they deserved after a miserable performance at Selhurst Park on 27 September.

Alisson hailed despite Liverpool defeat
Alisson was brilliant despite Liverpool’s defeat, and without him, it genuinely could have been 5-0 to the hosts at half-time.
Alisson made five saves in the contest, and prevented a total of 0.89 goals in terms of the xG that was created with the chances that he stopped, as per Sofascore.
Alan Shearer was full of praise for the Reds ace, speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, he said: “Palace absolutely battered Liverpool in the first half, if it wasn’t for Alisson, who made four or five magnificent saves, the game would have been over then.”

Liverpool have the best goalkeeper in the world
The Reds have the best goalkeeper in the world between the sticks, that is abundantly clear after the Brazil star’s display against Oliver Glasner’s side.
He may have finished second behind Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Yashin award voting, but that is a popularity contest, rather than holding any weight in terms of actual validity.
- Alisson has played in all but one of the Reds’ matches this season
- He is contracted until 2027, so could still be at Anfield for two more seasons
- He ranked second behind Donnarumma for the Yashin by 366 points
Slot would not swap his stopper for anyone else in the world, and his presence behind the backline gives the Reds as good a chance as any to retain their title.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is waiting in the wings after he finally joined the L4 outfit this summer, but he may be waiting a long time, as the 33-year-old does not look to be slowing down anytime soon.
He is far and away the best in the position right now, and Slot may need him to be in form, if the defence continues to be as leaky as it was against Palace.
