Paul Merson can’t control himself at Liverpool howler not even he could make

Liverpool’s perfect start to the new season is over.

Liverpool lost 2-1 at Crystal Palace, as Eddie Nketiah scored a 98th-minute winner to give the Eagles a deserved victory over a poor Reds side.

Federico Chiesa’s controversial equaliser looked to have stolen a point for Liverpool late on, after Ismaila Sarr continued his incredible record against the Merseysiders with a close-range strike in the first half.

Arne Slot needs to regroup his side ahead of a big week, with trips to Galatasaray and Chelsea coming up over the next seven days.

Michael Dawson calls Arne Slot the wrong name

Slot has become a largely recognisable face over the past year, having romped to the Premier League with Liverpool in his first season in charge.

It’s not often you’ll see his name be mistaken in the world of football, but Dawson hilariously made that error during the Palace defeat.

The former Tottenham defender, watching the game for Sky Sports on Soccer Saturday, mistakenly called the Dutchman “Jurgen Slot”, mixing him up with his predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

The remark was met with laughter, especially from Paul Merson, who is notorious for getting names wrong while on the show.

As the Soccer Saturday pundits laughed in unison, Merson joked: “Even I’m laughing at that.”

Liverpool need some Jurgen Klopp energy at the moment

Liverpool’s performance was terrible at Selhurst Park, with a spark missing from the Reds’ lineup at the moment.

That is something that was rarely ever missing under the tutelage of Klopp, who prided himself on his gegenpressing style of play, which was full of energy and excitement.

Liverpool were far too open against Crystal Palace

Slot needs to revisit the drawing board and incorporate some of Klopp’s style into his own, as the Reds currently appear one-dimensional in many parts of the game, while also looking vulnerable at the back.

Liverpool will get there eventually this season. Slot has shown he has the tactical acumen to get the Merseysiders firing this season.

But it needs to fixed soon, before results like the Palace defeat become a regular occurrence.
